The story of Dragon Man begins more than ninety years ago, with an extraordinary discovery that almost disappeared forever.
In 1933, in the city of Harbin in northeastern China, a Chinese labourer reportedly discovered an unusually large and remarkably well-preserved human skull. At the time, the region was under Japanese occupation, and according to the story later told by his family, the man decided not to turn the skull over to the occupying authorities. Instead, he hid it at the bottom of an abandoned well.

And there it stayed.
For decades, scientists had no idea the skull existed. The man who supposedly discovered it kept the secret for most of his life, and it wasn’t until shortly before his death that he reportedly told his family where it had been hidden. In 2018, the skull finally emerged from its hiding place and was eventually donated to scientists for study.
There is some uncertainty surrounding this remarkable origin story. Because researchers weren’t present when the skull was discovered in 1933 and its location wasn’t scientifically documented at the time, they cannot independently verify every detail about exactly where or under what circumstances it was originally found.
But the skull itself was very real, and it was extraordinary!
Scientists determined that the individual had lived at least approximately 146,000 years ago. The skull belonged to an adult male and was exceptionally complete compared with many other ancient human fossils.
His appearance would have been striking.
He possessed a massive skull with enough room for a brain comparable in size to that of modern humans, yet his skull was long and relatively low. Heavy brow ridges stretched above large eye sockets. His face was broad, his nose was wide, and his teeth were unusually large.
Yet mixed among those ancient-looking features were characteristics that seemed surprisingly similar to those of modern humans.
Scientists were looking at a combination of features that didn’t fit comfortably into any obvious category.
Who was this man?
In 2021, a team of researchers proposed a dramatic answer. They argued that the Harbin skull represented an entirely new species of ancient human.
They named it Homo longi.
The name referred to the Heilongjiang region – often translated as the Black Dragon River – which quickly inspired a much more memorable nickname.

The announcement attracted worldwide attention. Even more surprisingly, the researchers’ evolutionary analysis suggested that the lineage represented by Dragon Man might have been more closely related to modern humans than Neanderthals were.
But almost immediately, other scientists questioned whether an entirely new species was necessary to explain the skull. There was another possibility.
Dragon Man might be a Denisovan.
That suggestion transformed an already fascinating fossil into something potentially revolutionary. Denisovans are among the most mysterious members of the human family tree. Their existence was discovered not through a complete skeleton or skull but through genetic material recovered from tiny fossil fragments found in Denisova Cave in Siberia.
One of the most important discoveries was a fragment of a young girl’s finger bone. DNA extracted from it revealed something scientists hadn’t expected. She wasn’t a modern human, and she wasn’t a Neanderthal. She belonged to another ancient human population.
Scientists called them Denisovans.
Over time, additional teeth, pieces of bone and a jaw from other locations were linked to Denisovan populations. Genetics revealed that they had once ranged across a considerable portion of Asia and had interbred with our own ancestors.
But researchers were missing something fundamental. They didn’t really know what a Denisovan face looked like. There was no widely accepted, reasonably complete Denisovan skull. Then Dragon Man appeared.
Researchers noticed similarities between the enormous Harbin skull and other fossils suspected of having Denisovan connections. Dragon Man’s unusually large tooth was especially interesting because Denisovan teeth recovered elsewhere were also remarkably large.
Perhaps the mysterious skull hidden in that well wasn’t evidence of an entirely unknown human species. Perhaps scientists had finally found the face of a population they had previously known largely through DNA and scattered bones.
There was one obvious way to investigate: extract ancient DNA from the skull.
Scientists tried, but it didn’t work.
After roughly 146,000 years, obtaining useful nuclear DNA from the skull and tooth proved extremely difficult. But instead of abandoning the question, researchers looked for other molecular clues. One approach involved ancient proteins preserved inside the skull.
Scientists successfully recovered dozens of endogenous proteins. Several contained genetic variants associated with Denisovans, and the analysis placed the Harbin individual alongside Denisovan populations.
It was an extraordinary clue.
But another discovery was even more remarkable.
Researchers turned their attention to something most people would probably never imagine could help solve an ancient mystery: the hardened dental plaque preserved on one of Dragon Man’s teeth.
Inside that dental calculus, scientists recovered ancient mitochondrial DNA. This time, they had what they needed.
The mitochondrial DNA belonged within known Denisovan genetic variation and showed connections with early Denisovans associated with Denisova Cave in Siberia.
In June 2025, the results of the molecular investigations were published in major scientific journals. Two independent types of evidence – ancient proteins and mitochondrial DNA – both pointed in the same direction.
Dragon Man had strong Denisovan affinities.
More than ninety years after someone reportedly pulled the skull from the ground, scientists finally had compelling evidence about who the mysterious man had been. And suddenly, Denisovans potentially had a face.
Until then, imagining Denisovans required considerable reconstruction and speculation. Scientists possessed genetic information, teeth, pieces of bone and other fragmentary remains, but relatively little material showing what an entire Denisovan head might actually have looked like.
The Harbin skull changed that.
If Dragon Man represents a Denisovan individual, at least some Denisovans had enormous skulls, substantial brow ridges, broad faces, large noses and remarkably large teeth. Their brains could also reach sizes comparable with our own.
But the discovery didn’t neatly resolve every scientific question.
The designation Homo longi remains part of an ongoing debate over how these ancient populations should be classified. Establishing that the Harbin individual has strong Denisovan genetic affinities does not automatically prove that every fossil previously grouped with Homo longi was Denisovan.

There is also a larger problem that runs throughout human evolutionary research: ancient human populations didn’t always behave like completely separate species.
They met.
They migrated.
And sometimes they had children together.
We know this because Denisovans never completely disappeared.
Their physical population vanished thousands of years ago, but portions of their DNA survive in people living today. Denisovan ancestry is particularly significant among some populations in Oceania and parts of Asia.
Our ancestors encountered Denisovans and interbred with them.
That means Dragon Man isn’t simply the remains of some strange creature occupying a forgotten branch of the evolutionary tree. He represents part of a complicated human story in which different populations encountered one another across prehistoric Asia.
And perhaps the strangest part of his story is how close we came to never knowing him at all.
According to the account surrounding the skull, a labourer discovered it in northeastern China in 1933 and decided to hide it.
He lowered it into a well.
Wars came and went. Governments changed. Generations passed. Meanwhile, one of the most remarkable ancient human skulls ever discovered remained hidden underground.
Approximately eighty-five years later, it finally emerged.
At first, scientists wondered whether they were staring into the face of an entirely new human species.
Then proteins preserved within the skull began revealing clues.
Finally, DNA hidden within hardened plaque on an ancient tooth helped unlock the mystery.
The answer wasn’t a monster, a mythical creature or an unknown civilization.
It was something arguably more remarkable.
For years, scientists had known the Denisovans largely through fragments and genetics. They knew these mysterious people had once lived across Asia. They knew our ancestors had encountered them. They even knew that some people alive today carry their DNA.
What scientists didn’t have was a face.
Then an enormous skull emerged from an old well in China.
And after nearly a century of secrets, Dragon Man may finally have given one of humanity’s most mysterious relatives a face.
