One Little Seed, a Whole Lot of Happiness 🌻

Maya had lived in the same apartment building for three years, but she barely knew anyone in it. People smiled in the hallway, exchanged polite hellos and then disappeared behind their doors.

One spring morning, Maya found a tiny envelope taped to her door.

Inside was a single sunflower seed and a handwritten note:

“Plant this somewhere that could use a little happiness.”

There was no name.

Maya didn’t have a garden, so she found an old flowerpot, filled it with soil and planted the seed. She placed the pot beside the front entrance where it could catch the afternoon sun.

A few days later, another pot appeared beside hers.

Then another.

Someone planted daisies. Someone else added lavender. A little boy from the second floor planted something he confidently announced was a watermelon, although nobody was entirely sure a watermelon could survive in a flowerpot.

By summer, the plain concrete entrance had become a colorful little garden.

But something else had changed too.

People stopped rushing through the doorway.

They lingered.

They watered one another’s plants. They learned names. Someone brought out a little bench. On warm evenings, neighbors who had lived only a few metres apart for years began sitting outside together talking and laughing.

Eventually, Maya discovered who had left the sunflower seed.

It was Mrs. Bennett from the fourth floor.

“Why did you leave it for me?” Maya asked.

Mrs. Bennett smiled.

“Because you always held the door open for everyone. I figured someone who noticed people would probably notice a flower too.”

By August, Maya’s sunflower towered above every other plant.

One afternoon she carefully collected some of its seeds and tucked them into tiny envelopes.

On each one she wrote the same message.

“Plant this somewhere that could use a little happiness.”

Then she started leaving them on doors.

Because sometimes making the world a little brighter doesn’t require doing something enormous.

Sometimes you just plant one seed. 🌻
