The Kindness That Found Its Way Home

On a bitterly cold morning, Sarah was walking downtown when she noticed a man sitting beside a building with a small backpack at his feet. Most people hurried past, bundled tightly against the wind. Sarah almost did too, but then she noticed his hands. He wasn’t wearing gloves.

Sarah walked into the convenience store across the street and bought a hot chocolate, a sandwich and the warmest pair of gloves she could find. When she returned, she handed him the bag and simply said, “I thought you might be cold.”

The man looked inside and smiled. “You have no idea how much this helps.”

His name was Michael. Sarah sat beside him for a few minutes, and they talked about ordinary things—the weather, hockey and the ridiculous price of groceries. Before leaving, Sarah handed him a transit pass she had purchased inside the store.

Michael thanked her again and told her that someday he would pay her back. Sarah smiled and shook her head. “You don’t have to. Just help somebody else when you can.”

A few days later, Michael was riding the bus when an older woman climbed aboard carrying several heavy grocery bags. He immediately stood and offered her his seat. When she reached her stop, Michael noticed her struggling with the bags again, so he got off the bus with her and carried the groceries to her apartment building.

The woman tried to give him five dollars for helping her, but Michael refused. Instead, he repeated the words Sarah had said to him: “Just help somebody else when you can.”

The woman remembered those words.

The following week, she was standing in line at the grocery store when she noticed a young mother ahead of her quietly putting several items back. She had miscalculated how much money she had and couldn’t afford everything in her cart.

Without making a fuss, the older woman stepped forward and paid the difference.

The young mother was embarrassed but incredibly grateful. She promised she would repay her somehow, but the woman smiled and told her, “Just help somebody else when you can.”

And eventually, she did.

A few weeks later, the young mother went through the clothing her daughter had outgrown. Instead of throwing it away or trying to sell it, she packed several bags and donated everything to a community outreach centre that helped people struggling in the neighborhood.

Among the donated clothing was a warm winter coat.

Not long afterward, that coat was given to a man who had recently found temporary housing after spending months without a permanent home.

His name was Michael.

When Michael learned how the coat had arrived at the outreach centre, he couldn’t help but smile. Months earlier, Sarah had stopped for him when everyone else was rushing past. She had given him warm gloves, something to eat and a few minutes of her time.

Michael had helped an older woman.

The older woman had helped a young mother.

The young mother had donated clothing.

And one of those donations had somehow found its way back to Michael.

Nobody had planned it. Nobody had kept track of who owed whom. There were no expectations and no rewards. One person had simply made life a little easier for another, and that kindness had quietly travelled from stranger to stranger.

Michael zipped up his new coat, pulled Sarah’s gloves over his hands and stepped outside.

As he walked down the street, he noticed another man sitting alone on the sidewalk. Michael stopped for a moment, reached into his backpack and found an unopened granola bar.

He walked over and handed it to him.

It wasn’t much. It wasn’t going to solve every problem the man faced, and Michael knew that.

But he had learned something.

A good deed doesn’t have to change someone’s entire life to matter. Sometimes it only needs to make one difficult moment a little easier.
