On her way home from work, Hazel spotted a wallet lying beside the sidewalk. She picked it up and opened it, hoping to find some identification. Inside was a driver’s licence, several bank cards and nearly $400 in cash.
For approximately three seconds, Hazel’s tired brain whispered, That’s a lot of takeout.
Then, of course her conscience showed up. The address on the licence was only a few blocks away, so Hazel decided to return it herself. When she knocked on the door, an older man answered. The moment he saw the wallet in her hand, his entire expression changed.
“You found it!”
He explained that he’d lost it while walking home from the bank. The money inside was meant to pay for groceries and a birthday gift for his granddaughter. He had already retraced his route twice and had begun believing it was gone for good.
He immediately tried to give Hazel some of the money as a reward.
She shook her head. “Buy your granddaughter something extra.”
The man smiled, thanked her repeatedly, and Hazel headed home feeling considerably better about the world.
Two days later, she stopped at her neighborhood coffee shop before work.
When she reached the counter, the barista smiled. “Yours is already paid for.”
Confused, Hazel looked around. Sitting near the window was the man whose wallet she’d returned. He lifted his coffee and waved. Beside him sat a little girl wearing a brand-new sparkly backpack.
Hazel smiled and waved back.
Doing the right thing doesn’t always come with a reward.
Sometimes it simply reminds someone that there are still good people in the world.
And every once in a while, it comes with free coffee. ❤️☕
