Amelia stopped at a small roadside fruit stand on her way home and spotted one last basket of strawberries. They were perfect—bright red, enormous, and exactly what she’d been craving all day.
She reached for them just as a little boy beside her whispered to his dad, “Those are Grandma’s favourite.” His father checked his wallet and quietly told him they could get some another time.
Amelia looked at the strawberries, then at the boy. She sighed dramatically. “Well,” she said, stepping away from the basket, “I’ve just remembered that I’m actually more of a blueberry person.”
The boy immediately grabbed the strawberries and beamed. Amelia bought some blueberries and headed home, completely satisfied with her very questionable change in fruit loyalty.
A week later, she returned to the same stand. The woman working there recognized her immediately. “You’re the blueberry lady!”
Amelia laughed. “Apparently that’s my reputation now.”
The woman reached beneath the counter and handed her a basket of strawberries. “The little boy and his dad came back yesterday. He told me about the lady who let him buy strawberries for his grandma. He asked if I’d give these to you if you came back.”
There was a tiny handwritten note tucked inside.
For the blueberry lady. Grandma loved them. Thank you.
Amelia drove home with her strawberries and a smile she couldn’t get rid of.
Kindness doesn’t have to be something enormous. Sometimes it’s simply noticing when you have the chance to make someone else’s day a little sweeter.
And occasionally, it comes back in a basket. 🍓❤️
