October 28, 2026, marks three years since the world lost Matthew Perry, the beloved actor whose humour touched millions and whose greatest wish was to help others facing the struggles he knew so well.

For millions of television viewers, Matthew Perry will forever be Chandler Bing, the quick-witted, sarcastic, and lovable character who helped make Friends one of the most successful sitcoms in television history. His extraordinary comedic timing and ability to bring laughter to even the simplest moments made him a household name. Yet behind the humour was a man whose life was far more complicated than the character he portrayed.
Matthew Langford Perry was born on August 19, 1969, in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Following his parents’ separation, he spent much of his childhood in Ottawa, Ontario, where he became a nationally ranked junior tennis player. As a teenager, he moved to Los Angeles to live with his father and pursue an acting career, eventually landing the role that would change his life forever.
In 1994, Matthew was cast as Chandler Bing alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer. For ten seasons, Friends entertained audiences around the world, becoming a cultural phenomenon that continues to attract new generations of viewers. Matthew’s portrayal of Chandler brought warmth and vulnerability to a character who often used humour to hide his insecurities, making him one of television’s most beloved personalities.
His career extended beyond Friends, with memorable performances in Fools Rush In, The Whole Nine Yard, 17 Again, The West Wing, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. However, while his professional life flourished, Matthew was privately struggling with substance use disorder, an illness that would affect him for much of his adult life.
In his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Matthew shared an extraordinarily candid account of his experiences with addiction, recovery, loneliness, and serious medical complications. He revealed the painful contrast between his public success and private struggles, helping challenge the stigma surrounding substance use disorder.
Despite his difficulties, Matthew remained determined to help others. He supported recovery initiatives, opened a sober-living residence, and frequently spoke about the importance of compassion and treatment. He hoped that when people remembered him, they would think not only of Chandler Bing but also of the lives he had helped.
Tragically, on October 28, 2023, Matthew was found unresponsive in the hot tub at his Pacific Palisades home in Los Angeles. He was 54 years old. The medical examiner determined that he died from the acute effects of ketamine, with drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine listed as contributing factors. His death was ruled accidental.
A subsequent federal investigation uncovered an illegal ketamine distribution scheme involving several individuals, including medical professionals and Matthew’s former personal assistant. Five people were prosecuted in connection with the case, with the final sentencing taking place in May 2026. Although the proceedings brought legal accountability, they could never undo the devastating loss experienced by Matthew’s family, friends, and fans.
Following his death, tributes poured in from around the world. Fans gathered outside the apartment building made famous by Friends, leaving flowers, photographs, and heartfelt messages. His former castmates mourned the loss of a friend whose presence had shaped their lives for decades.
Matthew’s family also worked to ensure that his commitment to helping others would continue. The Matthew Perry Foundation was established to support people affected by substance use disorder, reduce stigma, and advocate for greater access to recovery resources. In Canada, Matthew Perry House has also carried forward his legacy of compassion and support.
Three years after his death, Matthew remains deeply missed. His performances continue bringing laughter to millions, while his honesty about addiction has encouraged important conversations about recovery, mental health, and the importance of treating people with dignity.
Perhaps the most meaningful part of Matthew’s legacy is that he wanted to be remembered for something beyond fame. He understood the joy that Friends brought to audiences, but he hoped his greatest contribution would be helping someone else find their way through difficult times.
Matthew Perry was more than Chandler Bing. He was a son, a brother, a friend, a talented actor, and a man who continued trying to overcome extraordinary personal challenges. His struggles did not define his entire life, nor did they erase the kindness, humour, and generosity he shared with others.
On October 28, 2026, we remember Matthew not only for the laughter he gave the world, but for his courage in sharing his story and his determination to make a difference.
He made millions of people laugh, but he wanted to help people heal. And through the work being carried forward in his memory, that wish continues to matter.
Rest peacefully, Matthew Perry.
